A Minnesota felon was charged Wednesday in the killing of a Los Angeles-based model Maleesa Mooney who was stuffed inside her refrigerator, gasped, and with her wrists and ankles tied together.

Tragic Death of Maleesa Mooney, Sister of Guyanese Pop Star

Maleesa Mooney, sister of Guyanese pop star Jourdin Pauline, was tragically found dead on September 12, 2023, during a welfare check conducted by the LAPD at her luxury apartment in downtown Los Angeles.

Suspect Identified and Charged

Magnus Daniel Humphrey, identified as the “suspect responsible” for Mooney’s brutal slaying, was apprehended by police at his Hopkins, Minn., home on an unrelated warrant. 

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office has filed murder charges against Humphrey, who has waived extradition and will be transported back to Los Angeles to face charges. The murder charge includes a special allegation of murder during the commission of torture.

Unclear Relationship and Criminal History

Investigators have not disclosed the relationship between Humphrey, 41, and Mooney. 

Humphrey had been on probation for federal narcotics offenses and has a history of several felonies in Minnesota and Illinois, including gun charges, assaults, sexual assaults, and false imprisonment.

Victim’s Background and Tragic Circumstances

Mooney, 31, worked as a real estate agent at a Beverly Hills-based agency and had recently moved into her Skye at Bunker Hill unit a month before her death. She was two months pregnant at the time of her death and had aspirations of becoming a mother.

Last Moments and Discovery

Surveillance cameras at Mooney’s apartment complex captured her on September 6, marking the last time she was seen alive. 

Concerns were raised when Mooney’s parents’ text messages went unanswered, prompting the LAPD to conduct a welfare check. Tragically, Mooney’s body was discovered in the refrigerator, with blood found on the floor, indicating a horrific ordeal.
