Katy Perry‘s highly anticipated return to the music scene has stumbled, as her latest single, “Woman’s World,” debuted disappointingly at number 63 on the US charts and number 47 in the UK.

The single is the first release from her upcoming seventh album, 143, set to drop in September.

Critical and Public Reception

The release has been met with a wave of criticism on social media and from music critics. The Guardian harshly criticized the single, asking, “what regressive, warmed-over hell is this?” while The Cut remarked that “Perry is stuck in 2016.”

Rolling Stone even questioned if Perry had released “the worst comeback single of all time.”

On the track, Perry sings about women being sisters, mothers, champions, and winners, all while being sexy and confident, with a catchy chorus proclaiming, “It’s a woman’s world, and you’re lucky to be living in it.”

Controversial Music Video

The music video has also been a point of contention. Featuring Perry dressed as Rosie the Riveter, the video shows women dancing around a construction site in revealing outfits, using urinals, brandishing sex toys, and even Perry being hit by an anvil, prompting her to grow bionic legs.

The video also includes an appearance by YouTuber Trisha Paytas, dragging a monster truck.

In a behind-the-scenes video posted on Instagram, Perry explained that the video was intended to be “satire,” “slapstick,” and “very on the nose.”

Despite this explanation, The Guardian’s Laura Snapes argued that Perry is struggling to keep up with her pop star peers like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Charli XCX, who embody the qualities Perry once had but seems to have lost.

Collaboration Controversy

Perry has faced additional backlash for working with producer Dr. Luke on the single, especially given the song’s theme of female empowerment. Dr. Luke has a controversial history, including a high-profile lawsuit with singer Kesha, who accused him of sexual, physical, verbal, and emotional abuse.

Although they settled a defamation lawsuit last year, the collaboration has drawn criticism. Kesha, who recently released her first track as an independent artist, seemingly mocked Perry’s choice by tweeting “lol” and later wearing a vest top with the same message.

Perry’s Career Highlights and Recent Struggles

Katy Perry’s career has seen remarkable highs, including her 2010 album Teenage Dream, which made her the first female artist to have five number one songs from the same album on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

She has also achieved five number one singles in the UK, spanning from 2008’s “I Kissed A Girl” to her 2017 collaboration “Feels” with Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams, and Big Sean.

However, her recent works have not matched her past success. Perry’s last album, Smile, released in 2020, received mixed reviews but did reach the top five in both the UK and US charts. Its lead single, “Daisies,” peaked at number 37 on the UK chart.

As Perry prepares to release her new album 143, the tepid reception of “Woman’s World” highlights the challenges she faces in recapturing her former glory and relevance in the ever-evolving pop music landscape.
