A Bold Instagram Post

Kacey Musgraves, known for her fearless self-expression, recently shared a nearly nude selfie on her Instagram Stories. On June 14, the 35-year-old country star posted a photo from what appeared to be a hair and makeup trailer on set.

In the picture, Musgraves smiles while holding her phone for a mirror selfie as her glam squad applies mud or muddy makeup to her skin. A small brown heart emoji was strategically placed to cover her private area.

A History of Artistic Nudity

This isn’t the first time Musgraves has bared it all for her art. In October 2021, she performed nude on the season 47 premiere of Saturday Night Live.

Inspired by Robin Wright’s portrayal of Jenny Curran in the 1994 film Forrest Gump, Musgraves sang “justified” from her fifth studio album Star-Crossed, wearing only a guitar and Celine cowboy boots.

Wright’s character performed nude while singing Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” (performed by Joan Baez on the soundtrack) at a strip club, which Musgraves channeled during her SNL performance.

Family Disapproval and Artistic Vision

Musgraves has faced some disapproval for her artistic choices, particularly from her grandmother regarding a nude alternate album cover for her sixth studio album, Deeper Well.

In a March interview on the Apple Music Country show Today’s Country Radio with Kelleigh Bannen, Musgraves discussed her grandmother’s reaction to the promo image shot by her sister Kelly.

She explained her vision for the cover: “I just randomly had this idea… Because it was a big, wide-open green space. And I was like, ‘What if I was just really small?’ Like in the fetal position, sort of, into the earth,” she said. “And it’s just sort of vulnerable and almost like rebirth, I guess.”

An Ongoing Artistic Journey

The alternate cover image shows Musgraves laying in the grass with her back to the camera, highlighting her vulnerability and creative vision. This choice of imagery aligns with her continuous exploration of self-expression and personal growth through her music and public persona.

Kacey Musgraves continues to push boundaries and embrace vulnerability in her art, whether through her music or her daring public appearances.

Her commitment to authentic self-expression resonates with many of her fans and solidifies her place as a bold and influential figure in the music industry.
