Justin Timberlake‘s lawyer has stated that the pop star was “not intoxicated” when he was arrested last month for driving under the influence.

The 43-year-old musician was detained in New York for running a stop sign and failing to stay on the right side of the road.

Details of the Arrest

Timberlake was stopped in Sag Harbor, a popular summer destination for celebrities in the Hamptons on Long Island. According to a charging document, officers noted that Timberlake’s eyes were “bloodshot and glassy,” and there was a “strong odour of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath.”

The document also mentioned that his speech was slowed and he performed poorly on sobriety tests. Timberlake refused a breathalyser test and allegedly told the officer, “I had one martini and I followed my friends home,” according to CBS News.

His first court hearing took place on Friday. Timberlake was not present as the date coincided with the start of his Everything I Thought It Was world tour, beginning at the Tauron Arena in Krakow. Representing Timberlake, lawyer Edward Burke claimed police made “a very significant number of errors” in the case.

“The most important fact to know about this case is that Justin was not intoxicated and should not have been arrested for DWI,” Burke asserted.

Speaking outside Sag Harbor Village Justice Court, Burke emphasized Timberlake’s cooperation with law enforcement, stating, “He respects law enforcement and cooperated with the police officers at all times.

But the fact remains, he was not intoxicated and they made an error in arresting him for it. We are confident that this charge will be dismissed.” Timberlake will be re-arraigned virtually in court next month.

Past and Potential Consequences

Timberlake has previously spoken openly about seeking help for excessive drinking. In New York, penalties for driving while intoxicated can include up to a year in jail, a $1,000 fine, and the suspension of a driver’s license for at least six months.

Despite the current charges, Timberlake’s legal team remains optimistic about the outcome of the case.
