There’s just no telling how far Disney’s live-action Moana movie will go! Dwayne Johnson, 52, shared exciting updates on the casting and production of the highly anticipated film in an Instagram post on Friday, July 5.

Johnson will reprise his role as the demigod Maui, whom he originally voiced in the 2016 animated Moana and will voice again in 2024’s Moana 2.

Production and Release Date

In his update, Johnson revealed that “production begins this August” and announced a new release date for the live-action film: June 27, 2025.

This date is a shift from Disney’s initial release plan of July 10, 2026. Johnson expressed his excitement about the casting news and shared headshots of the new cast alongside their animated counterparts.

Introducing the Cast

Newcomer Catherine Laga’aia will take on the role of the titular Polynesian heroine, Moana. John Tui, who previously worked with Johnson on the NBC series Young Rock, will portray Moana’s father, Chief Tui.

Frankie Adams has been cast as Moana’s mother, Sina, and Rena Owen will play her grandmother, Gramma Tala. Johnson himself will embody the larger-than-life demigod Maui.

“It’s our deepest honor to share the legends, songs, dances, and traditions of our Polynesian culture with all of you and your families around the world,” Johnson wrote, highlighting the cultural importance of the film. The Jumanji star concluded his post by emphasizing the joy and inspiration this story brings.
