South Los Angeles was the scene of several chaotic street takeovers from Sunday night into Monday morning, leaving a trail of destruction including a fiery car crash, looting, and vandalism.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD), and California Highway Patrol (CHP), were called to respond to the incidents.

Fiery Crash and Large Crowds

One of the most significant events occurred in Manchester Square, where over 300 spectators gathered to watch illegal street racing. The situation escalated when a car was set on fire, forcing the LAPD to disperse the crowd.

Later, at around 2:30 a.m. on Monday morning, more damage ensued at the intersection of Manchester Avenue and Avalon Boulevard. Here, looters broke into a Wingstop restaurant, stealing cash and chicken.

Emergency Responses

The LAFD was kept busy, responding to a car fire and a busted fire hydrant at the intersection of Century Boulevard and Western Avenue. Amid the chaos, a shooting was also reported nearby, although no victims have been identified so far.

Additional Incidents Across South LA

Further down Century Boulevard at the intersection of Hoover Street, the LAPD broke up another street takeover involving over 100 cars. This event also led to theft from a nearby taco stand, as people scrambled to watch the illegal activities.

Compton Takeovers

The LASD’s Compton Station confirmed another street takeover at around 10 p.m. at the intersection of Greenleaf Boulevard and South Santa Fe Avenue. Officers responded to reports of gunfire, but the crowd dispersed upon their arrival, and no shooting victims were found.

Additionally, at the intersection of Rosecrans and Central Avenues in Compton, another takeover occurred despite efforts to prevent such activities with box spots on the road.

CHP officers, including an air unit, pursued one of the vehicles involved. The suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. During the pursuit, one of the CHP units crashed into a center median, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Conclusion

The series of street takeovers in South Los Angeles caused significant disruption and required a coordinated response from multiple law enforcement and emergency agencies.

The incidents highlight ongoing challenges with illegal street racing and gatherings, which continue to pose risks to public safety and property.
