Elite Gathering Launches Campaign Against Progressive Officials

In a lavish Beverly Hills estate last November, Los Angeles’s political and business elite convened to kick off a campaign aimed at countering progressive officials who have been reshaping local politics.

Led by billionaire real estate developer Rick Caruso, the event marked the formation of a new PAC called Thrive LA and signaled the beginning of a concerted effort to challenge progressives like City Councilmember Nithya Raman.

Targeting Progressive Policies

The campaign aims to push back against progressive initiatives such as renter protections, affordable housing, workers’ rights, unarmed crisis response to public safety calls, and campaign finance reforms.

Raman, who faces reelection in March, has been a vocal advocate for these policies and has garnered support from unions, community organizations, and the Los Angeles Times.

The First Battle in a Larger War

Organizers see the campaign against Raman as just the beginning of a broader strategy to curb the influence of progressives in LA.

Political consultant Jimmy Blackman, speaking at the fundraiser, suggested that defeating Raman would pave the way to target other progressive officials in the future, setting the stage for the 2026 elections.

An Exclusive Affair

The invitation-only event, hosted by developer Fred Afari, brought together a mix of Republicans and corporate Democrats who perceive themselves as the voice of reason in Los Angeles politics.

Attendees, including developers, business leaders, lobbyists, political consultants, and union representatives, gathered with the shared goal of reclaiming control of LA’s government from progressives.

Challenges Ahead

While the campaign represents a formidable challenge to Raman and other progressives, it also underscores the growing divide within the city’s political landscape.

As the battle heats up, the outcome of the March elections will provide a glimpse into the future direction of Los Angeles politics and the ongoing struggle between establishment interests and progressive ideals.
