Introduction:

On Sunday, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for Southern California counties ahead of a powerful storm set to bring steady rain until Monday.

The affected counties include Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura. The storm, fueled by an atmospheric river over the Pacific Ocean, is expected to have dangerous and potentially life-threatening impacts.

Emergency Measures:

Governor Newsom emphasized the severity of the situation, urging residents to heed emergency orders and alerts from local officials.

The state of emergency declaration provides authorization for the California National Guard to respond if necessary. It also facilitates the involvement of out-of-state contractors and utilities to address storm damage.

Preparedness and Response:

Highlighting California’s readiness, Newsom stated that a record number of emergency assets are positioned to respond to the storm’s impacts.

The proactive measures aim to ensure swift and effective responses to potential challenges posed by the severe weather conditions.

Atmospheric River Influence:

The storm, driven by an atmospheric river in the Pacific, is drawing a substantial amount of moisture into Southern California.

Steady rain is anticipated throughout the night and into Monday.

Flood watches and warnings are in effect, particularly for areas near burn scars and those prone to floods and slides.

Evacuation Precautions:

Communities in proximity to burn scars and areas susceptible to flooding or landslides have received evacuation warnings and orders. These precautions are designed to prioritize public safety and mitigate the potential risks associated with the storm.

Collaborative Response Efforts:

The declaration of a state of emergency underscores the collaborative efforts at various levels of government to address the challenges posed by severe weather events.

Authorities are working in tandem to safeguard residents and minimize the impact of the storm on Southern California communities.
