Musician Eden Golan has been chosen to represent Israel at the Eurovision Song Contest as organizers face calls to exclude the nation over the conflict in Gaza.

The selection of Golan, a 20-year-old Israeli singer, in a TV talent show sparked controversy after she dedicated her performance of Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” to Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

While Golan’s performance was praised, musicians in several countries have called for Israel to be suspended from participating in Eurovision.

Calls for Suspension

In December, Iceland’s Association of Composers and Lyricists declared Israel’s military actions in Gaza incompatible with the joyful and optimistic spirit of Eurovision.

A petition, signed by thousands, called for Israel’s expulsion, with some suggesting that Iceland should withdraw from the competition if Israel is allowed to participate.

Similar petitions and statements have emerged in Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden, with artists accusing Israel of war crimes and demanding action from their national broadcasters.

Resistance and Response

Despite mounting pressure, Eurovision organisers have resisted calls for Israel’s exclusion, asserting that the situations in Ukraine and Gaza are distinct.

Israeli officials have dismissed the accusations as “absurd” and accused critics of anti-Israel bias. However, the controversy continues to fuel debate over the intersection of politics and music in international events like Eurovision.
