A Piece of Film History

The gold bikini worn by the late Carrie Fisher in Return of the Jedi has fetched $175,000 (£136,000) at auction.

This Star Wars costume, renowned as one of the most famous outfits in film history, includes a bikini top, bikini plates, hip rings, an armlet, and a bracelet.

Carrie Fisher’s Initial Reaction

Fisher, who portrayed Princess Leia in the Star Wars films, initially thought director George Lucas was “kidding” when he showed her the bikini. In an interview with NPR a month before her death in 2016, she expressed that she felt “nearly naked, which is not a style choice for me,” and it made her “very nervous.”

Challenges During Filming

The actress also revealed the physical challenges of wearing the bikini during filming. “I had to sit very straight because I couldn’t have lines on my sides, like little creases. No creases were allowed, so I had to sit very, very rigid straight,” Fisher recounted.

Other Auction Highlights

In addition to Fisher’s bikini, the auction featured several other notable items. A miniature Starfighter aircraft used in the filming of the first Star Wars movie sold for $1.5 million (£1.1 million).

Heritage Auctions, which conducted the sale, noted that the object is one of only two filming miniatures created for the production.

A wand used by Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban fetched $52,000, while a hammer prop from a Thor film made $81,000. An outfit worn by Macaulay Culkin in the first Home Alone film was sold for $47,500.

These remarkable items highlight the enduring popularity and cultural significance of iconic film memorabilia.
