Mystical Gathering at Hocus Pocus Tiny Hotel

On Friday, York played host to a mystical gathering of over 100 witches who braved the rainy weather to celebrate “dark magic and ancient wonder.”

Organized by the Hocus Pocus Tiny Hotel, the event featured a range of magical activities including sage burning, blessings, fortune telling, live music, and the offering of “tantalising elixirs.”

Celebration of Modern Witchcraft

Camelia Andrei, one of the hotel’s owners, described the event as a “celebration of modern witchcraft.” This marked the second annual Witches Coven at the themed hotel, with part of the proceeds directed towards supporting the homeless in York.

York’s Spiritual and Magical Heritage

York, renowned for its historical ties to spiritualism and magic, was an apt setting for the event.

The Shambles, a famous street in the city, is home to numerous wizardly shops. Historical research from Huddersfield University indicates that Yorkshire had a higher number of witches in the 1600s than any other region in England.

The event included tours of York’s haunted locations, led by Mad Alice from The Bloody Tour of York. She highlighted York’s rich 2,000-year history, mentioning that the city had often been graced by witches.

Additionally, Mother Shipton’s Cave, a Knaresborough attraction, contributed water from its famous well, reputed to have mystical properties.

Weather and Festivities

Despite the rain, the witches were undeterred, donning their best attire with prizes awarded for the best dressed. The weather did little to dampen the spirits of the attendees, who engaged enthusiastically in the festivities.

Community and Diversity

Ms. Andrei reflected on the event’s success and its significance for the community. “Last year was the first event, and an overwhelming response spurred us to go all out for The Witches Coven 2024.

It’s a celebration of the diversity of our community and the power of coming together to embrace our shared love of all things weird and wonderful,” she said.

The Witches Coven event in York underscored the enduring allure of witchcraft and the city’s deep historical connection to magical traditions.
