A vast gas explosion in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, has killed at least three individuals and injured around 300.

Explosion and Devastation

A lorry carrying gas cylinders exploded in Nairobi’s Embakasi district, creating a massive fireball that ignited nearby buildings, businesses, and vehicles.

The incident occurred around 23:30 on Thursday, causing extensive damage to residential areas and leaving behind a scene of devastation.

Casualties and Injuries

The blast resulted in multiple casualties, including the tragic death of a child.

The Embakasi police chief, Wesley Kimeto, warns that the death toll could rise. Over 271 individuals, including 25 children, were rushed to hospitals.

Nairobi county Governor Sakaja Johnson reveals that while many have been treated and sent home, at least 39 people, some critically injured, have been transferred to other facilities.

Cause of the Explosion

Initially thought to be a gas plant incident, authorities clarified that a lorry exploded in a parking yard.

The blast’s impact was far-reaching, damaging nearby structures, vehicles, and businesses. A clothing and textiles warehouse was burnt down after being hit by a flying gas cylinder.

Government Response and Investigation

Kenya’s deputy president assures that those responsible for the tragedy will be held accountable. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances leading to the explosion.

The government promises a robust response, and a search and rescue operation is ongoing to ensure no one is missing.

Illegal Gas Plant Uncovered

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) reveals that the gas plant was illegal, and three permit applications for construction were rejected due to safety concerns and the high population density around the proposed site.

Questions arise about how the facility continued to operate despite safety objections.

Responsibility and Compensation

Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura emphasizes that the company owners must compensate the victims and take full responsibility for the explosion.

He condemns the risk to lives for profit and cites weak enforcement institutions and corruption as contributing factors to such tragic incidents.

Government Pledges Tough Response

Vice-President Rigathi Gachagua promises a strong government response, calling for adherence to the rule of law. He assures that those found culpable in this unacceptable occurrence will face accountability.

The tragedy sheds light on the importance of stringent safety regulations and the need for responsible corporate practices to prevent such catastrophic events in the future.
