The artist joined the series as a judge with Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie back in 2018.

Katy Perry, the renowned singer and long-time judge on “American Idol,” was overcome with emotion during the show’s season finale on Sunday, May 19.

The tearful moment came as Abi Carter secured her victory, marking a poignant end to Perry’s tenure on the popular talent competition.

An Emotional Moment

Perry, 39, couldn’t hold back her tears as she watched Carter perform Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” during the final moments of the show.

The emotional performance capped off a dramatic season finale, where Carter triumphed over fellow contestants Will Moseley and Jack Blocker, who placed second and third, respectively.

As Carter sang, Perry embraced her fellow judges, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, visibly moved by the culmination of her journey on the show. Perry’s reaction highlighted the deep connection she has formed with the contestants and her co-judges over the years.

End of an Era

Katy Perry joined “American Idol” as a judge in 2018, alongside country star Luke Bryan, 47, and music legend Lionel Richie, 74.

Together, they helped revive the series on ABC after its original 15-season run on Fox. Over seven seasons, Perry has become a staple of the show, known for her insightful critiques and vibrant personality.

Earlier this year, Perry announced her departure from “American Idol” during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” She expressed her love for the show and hinted at future projects, including new music slated for release later in 2024.

“I think this probably will be my last show, my last season for Idol,” Perry confirmed. “I love Idol so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat.”

Reflections from Co-Judge Luke Bryan

In an interview with “Taste of Country Nights,” Luke Bryan revealed that Perry’s decision to leave wasn’t entirely unexpected.

“I had heard whispers that she was thinking about it — it wasn’t, like, a huge shock,” he said. Bryan reflected on their time together on the show, noting the strong friendship they developed.

“It’s been a good run with Katy, and she and I have developed a great friendship.

I mean, heck, I was there before her daughter was born, and now her daughter is [3 years] old,” Bryan added, referring to Perry’s daughter Daisy Dove, whom she shares with fiancé Orlando Bloom.

Looking Ahead

As Perry steps away from “American Idol,” fans are eager to see what she has in store next. Her departure marks the end of a significant chapter for the show, but also opens up new opportunities for her career.

Perry’s contributions to “American Idol” have left an indelible mark, and her emotional farewell underscores the impact the show has had on her both professionally and personally.

With new music and projects on the horizon, Perry is ready to embark on the next phase of her illustrious career, carrying forward the love and lessons she gained from her time on “American Idol.”
