The 23-year-old gymnast, who originally secured a bronze medal for her individual floor routine in July, had the medal revoked following a dispute from the Romanian team.

Amidst the fallout from her Olympic experience, Chiles has leaned on the support of her close friend and teammate, Simone Biles.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Biles shared how she has been encouraging Chiles to fully embrace her emotions during this challenging time.

“You have to feel all these feels. Don’t let these emotions stop you. This will be the healthiest way to get all of this out,” Biles advised, emphasizing the importance of processing the emotional aftermath of the Olympics.

The Olympic Dispute

The controversy began when Chiles initially placed fifth in the floor final at the Paris Olympics. Her coach, Cecile Landi, disputed the score, arguing that a difficulty rating had been misjudged on one of Chiles’ leaps.

The judges agreed, increasing Chiles’ score from 13.666 to 13.766, which elevated her to third place, ahead of Romanian gymnasts Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea.

However, the Romanian Olympic committee protested, leading the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to review the case. CAS determined that Landi’s inquiry was submitted four seconds too late, resulting in Chiles losing her bronze medal.
