Tommy Shelby Returns

Cillian Murphy is set to don his iconic Peaky Blinders cap once more. On June 4, Netflix confirmed that Murphy’s character, gangster Tommy Shelby, will return in a movie adaptation of the hit series, which originally ran for six seasons from 2013 to 2022.

The announcement was made with a photo of the script posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), revealing that the film is written by Steven Knight and directed by Tom Harper.

Excitement from Cast and Crew

Murphy expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me… It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”

Director Tom Harper shared his excitement as well, saying, “When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive.

Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”

An Explosive Chapter

Creator Steven Knight also commented on the upcoming film, stating, “I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen. It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story.

No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.” Set in Birmingham, England, the original series followed the Shelby family’s criminal enterprise, which became a significant player in the city’s illegal bootlegging and betting rackets following World War I.

Star-Studded Cast

The series featured an ensemble cast including Helen McCrory, Tom Hardy, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Finn Cole. While the movie’s plot is being kept under wraps, Knight hinted in an April 2022 interview with Deadline that it would be “set in World War II.”

Production and Praise

Netflix’s confirmation follows Knight’s remarks to Birmingham World in March, where he confirmed Murphy’s return for the film. “He definitely is returning for it,” Knight said, adding, “We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth [England].”

Knight also praised Murphy’s performance in Oppenheimer, noting that the Best Actor Academy Award Murphy won in March “was so deserved.” He added, “I mean he’s brilliant, and he’s such a great human being and he leads the line when we’re shooting and he’s so levelheaded and straightforward. He deserves everything he gets.”

The Peaky Blinders movie promises to be a thrilling continuation of the Shelby family saga, much to the delight of its dedicated fan base.
