Nationwide Alert

All health centres and hospitals in Bangladesh have been ordered to stock anti-venom due to a significant rise in snake bites across the country.

Health Minister Dr. Samanta Lal Sen emphasized the importance of immediate medical attention for snake bite victims, urging the public to bring them to hospitals as quickly as possible.

Increase in Snake Bite Incidents

Hospitals, especially in rural areas, have reported a surge in snake bite cases, predominantly caused by the Russell’s viper, a venomous snake native to South Asia. This uptick in incidents has sparked considerable discussion on Bangladeshi social media platforms.

The Russell’s viper, which feeds on rodents, is often found near human settlements and farmlands, particularly during harvest season.

Although the species was declared extinct in Bangladesh in 2002, it has since reappeared and spread to over 25 districts. Scientists attribute this resurgence to the snake’s ability to adapt to varying climate conditions, expanding its habitat beyond dry areas.

Impact of Snake Bites

A 2023 study revealed that approximately 7,000 people die annually in Bangladesh from snake bites. However, prompt treatment with anti-venom significantly increases the chances of survival. The current surge in snake bites has heightened the urgency for accessible anti-venom supplies.

Global Health Perspective

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies snake bites as one of the most neglected tropical diseases, prioritizing efforts to address this issue globally.

The rise in snake bite cases in Bangladesh underscores the need for increased awareness and preparedness to mitigate the impact of this public health concern.

Government and Public Response

In response to the surge, the Bangladeshi government has taken swift action by ensuring all healthcare facilities are equipped with the necessary anti-venom.

Public health campaigns are also being intensified to educate communities on the importance of immediate medical treatment for snake bites and to prevent fatalities.

This comprehensive approach aims to reduce the mortality rate associated with snake bites and improve the overall health and safety of the population in Bangladesh.
