Several American Airlines employees have been placed on leave following an incident where black passengers were removed from a flight after a complaint about body odour.

This incident, which occurred on January 5, has led to allegations of racial discrimination and a lawsuit filed in May by the affected passengers.

CEO’s Response and Company Actions:

In a note to employees, CEO Robert Isom condemned the incident as unacceptable, stating that the company “fell short” of its commitment to its customers.

“We are holding those involved accountable, including removing team members from service,” the airline said in a statement. Additionally, American Airlines has announced several initiatives to prevent such incidents, including establishing an advisory group focused on the experience of black passengers.

Details of the Incident:

The lawsuit was filed by three men—Alvin Jackson, Emmanuel Jean Joseph, and Xavier Veal—who were not seated together and did not know each other.

They claim that all black men on the flight from Phoenix, Arizona, to New York City were singled out and removed, totaling eight passengers.

“American Airlines singled us out for being black, embarrassed us, and humiliated us,” they stated. After the incident, the three men were allowed to re-take their seats on the original flight.

Company’s Commitment to Improvement:

In a letter dated June 18, Isom expressed his disappointment over the incident and the failure of the airline’s procedures. “We fell short of our commitments and failed our customers,” he wrote.

He reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to working with civil rights organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to rebuild trust.

Previous Allegations of Discrimination:

This incident is not the first time American Airlines has faced accusations of discrimination.

In 2017, the NAACP issued a warning to black travelers to avoid the airline, citing a pattern of “disrespectful” and “discriminatory” behavior, and a “corporate culture of racial insensitivity and possible racial bias.”

The advisory was lifted the following year after the airline made operational changes. However, on June 4 of this year, the NAACP warned it might reinstate the advisory unless American Airlines provided a “swift and decisive response” to the January incident.

American Airlines’ actions in response to this latest incident indicate a renewed effort to address and prevent discrimination, but the company remains under scrutiny from civil rights organizations and the public.
