The recent announcement by UNESCO, designating 18 new Global Geoparks, has opened up exciting destinations for travelers seeking enriching experiences in geology, culture, and sustainability.

These parks not only showcase unique geological features but also offer insights into the natural, cultural, and intangible heritage of their regions. Let’s take a closer look at five of the newest additions to UNESCO’s list:

1. Uberaba, Brazil:

Dubbed the “Land of the Giants,” Uberaba boasts rich palaeontological heritage, including impressive geological formations like the Serra da Galga and Serra Geral mountain ranges.

The region is a treasure trove of fossils, with over 10,000 specimens of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. Themed routes guide visitors through museums, geosites, and hiking trails, offering immersive experiences in both geological wonders and cultural traditions.

2. Biokovo-Imotski Lakes, Croatia:

This geopark combines two distinct geological formations: the Biokovo mountain range and the stunning Red and Blue Lakes at Imotski.

Biokovo offers outdoor attractions such as nature walks and botanical gardens, while the lakes mesmerize visitors with their unique colors and formations. The contrasting landscapes provide a captivating backdrop for exploration and relaxation.

3. Meteora Pyli, Greece:

Meteora Pyli offers a captivating blend of nature and culture, with towering sandstone columns hosting Byzantine-era monasteries.

The geopark encompasses geological wonders like the Tafoni formations and the diverse biosphere of the Pindos Mountains. Visitors can embark on a journey through space, time, and geology while immersing themselves in the region’s rich history and natural beauty.

4. Longyan, China:

Longyan, the heart of China’s Hakka culture, is known for its distinctive roundhouse-style buildings and vibrant traditions.

The geopark extends to the surrounding natural forest, home to endemic plant and animal species. The designation aims to protect both cultural heritage and biodiversity, offering travelers a glimpse into the Hakka way of life amidst picturesque landscapes.

5. South Fyn Archipelago, Denmark:

This “drowned” ice age landscape comprises around 55 islands and islets, offering opportunities for sailing, diving, hiking, and farm-to-table experiences.

The archipelago’s rich history as an agricultural site is intertwined with its geological features, making it a compelling destination for nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

As UNESCO continues to expand its Global Geoparks network, travelers can look forward to discovering more destinations that celebrate the intricate connections between geology, culture, and sustainability. Each geopark tells a unique story, inviting visitors to explore and appreciate the wonders of our planet.
