Background of Miscarriage of Justice

Over a span of 15 years, more than 700 branch managers faced convictions for false accounting, theft, and fraud, all stemming from flawed software data. This situation has been deemed the most extensive miscarriage of justice in the history of the UK.

Investigations Uncover Potential Fraud Offences

Authorities are delving into potential fraud offenses linked to prosecutions resulting from faulty information, with particular focus on funds retrieved from sub-postmasters due to these prosecutions or civil actions.

The Metropolitan Police is actively investigating potential cases of perjury and obstructing justice in the Post Office’s conducted investigations and prosecutions.

Ongoing Inquiries and Limited Arrests

Although two individuals have been interviewed under caution, no arrests have been made since the investigation commenced in January 2020.

The investigation intensified following the emergence of 50 new possible victims after the recent airing of an ITV drama, reigniting public attention to the issue.

Post Office Response and Victim Fallout

The Post Office has encouraged those who believe they were wrongly convicted to consider appealing while refraining from commenting on ongoing police investigations.

Victims of this scandal endured imprisonment, financial ruin, and social ostracization, with some even passing away post-conviction.

Legal Reversals and Public Sympathy

Of the 93 overturned convictions, only 27 individuals have reached “full and final settlements.” While 54 cases resulted in maintained convictions or were withdrawn from the appeals process, a public inquiry continues to delve into this catastrophic incident.

The recent ITV series highlighting the plight of sub-postmaster Alan Bates has garnered widespread sympathy and renewed attention to the matter, shedding light on the legal battles fought and won to overturn multiple convictions.
