Official figures released show a 3.4% increase in retail sales following a significant drop in December. The rise was driven by strong food sales at supermarkets and positive impacts from January sales in department stores.

Food Sales Lead the Way

Supermarkets saw a notable increase in food sales, contributing to the overall rise in retail sales. Department stores also reported positive outcomes from January sales promotions, alongside robust trading in household goods stores and sports shops.

Inflation Remains Elevated

Despite the increase in sales, inflation remains high, with consumers paying more for goods.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported a 3.9% rise in the value of goods purchased compared to a 3.4% increase in product volume. Inflation stands at 4%, above the Bank of England’s target of 2%.

Impact of Previous Months

The sharp decline in retail sales in December, attributed to early Christmas shopping during Black Friday sales in November, contributed to a fall in gross domestic product (GDP). The UK officially entered a recession at the end of last year.

Consumer Sentiment and Economic Outlook

Opinions vary on whether January’s rebound signals a turning point for the retail sector and consumer spending.

While some economists, like Joe Maher from Capital Economics, believe the strong sales indicate the worst is behind the retail sector, others remain cautious, citing ongoing economic challenges and uncertainties.
