A New Approach: Patek Philippe’s Patented In-Line Perpetual Calendar

In 2021, Patek Philippe introduced a groundbreaking approach to perpetual calendar design with the unveiling of Reference 5236P-010. 

Departing from the traditional subdial layout, this innovative timepiece utilizes an in-line perpetual calendar display, featuring several apertures and a single large subdial. 

This design, patented by Patek Philippe, offers a sleek and minimalist aesthetic while retaining the functionality of a perpetual calendar.

Technical Marvel: Caliber 31-260 PS QL

At the heart of Reference 5236P-010 lies Patek Philippe’s ultra-thin automatic movement, Caliber 31-260 PS QL, which earned three patents for its innovative design. 

This movement powers the intricate perpetual calendar mechanism, allowing for seamless synchronization of the day, date, and month displays. Despite its complexity, the movement maintains a slim profile, enabling the watch to maintain a sleek and elegant appearance.

The 41.3mm platinum case of Reference 5236P-010 is meticulously hand-polished to achieve a flawless finish. The dial features an opaline rose-gilt color, reminiscent of vintage timepieces, adorned with applied white gold hour markers with a charcoal-gray finish. 

A large rectangular aperture at 12 o’clock elegantly showcases the day, date, and month, while smaller apertures at 8 and 4 o’clock indicate the day/night cycle and leap-year cycle, respectively. The subdial at 6 o’clock houses a small seconds hand and a stunning moon phase display.
