Receiving the Highest Honor

Bruce Springsteen was in London to receive the Ivor Novello Awards’ highest honor—a fellowship of the songwriting academy.

This accolade marks him as the first international star to be granted the award. Presenting the honor, Sir Paul McCartney praised Springsteen, stating he “couldn’t think of a more fitting” recipient, though he humorously suggested other legends like Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Beyoncé, and Taylor Swift as equally deserving.

Humorous Tribute by Sir Paul McCartney

Sir Paul added, “He’s known as the American working man, but he admits he’s never worked a day in his life.” He playfully imagined Springsteen fitting into The Beatles, concluding that “when it comes to talent, he’d definitely be in the top five.”

Springsteen took these jibes in good humor, warmly hugging McCartney as he approached the stage.

Springsteen’s Performance and Reflections

Despite having a hoarse voice from a rain-soaked, three-hour concert in Sunderland the previous night, Springsteen said he never considered canceling his performance.

He reflected on the harsh weather conditions: “We came out last night, and I was like, ‘What is this weather? Driving rain, wind roaring.’ But standing in front of me, in the rain, I realized: These are my people.”

Fond Memories of the UK

Springsteen also reminisced about his early experiences in the UK, which he now considers a second home. He humorously recounted his initial culture shock upon arriving in London in 1975, particularly his disappointment with the airplane food and the absence of cheeseburgers, replaced instead by fish and chips.

He recalled his apprehensions when seeing a huge sign at the Hammersmith Odeon proclaiming, “London is finally ready for Bruce Springsteen,” thinking, “If London isn’t ready for a cheeseburger, they may not be ready for me!”

Warm Reception at the Awards

Despite his croaky voice, Springsteen was warmly received at the Ivor Novello Awards. The crowd enthusiastically cheered him on as he performed a heartfelt version of “Thunder Road,” solidifying his cherished status among his British fans and peers.
