Zendaya‘s portrayal of tennis player-turned-coach Tashi Duncan in the upcoming film “Challengers” has already garnered praise from none other than tennis superstar Serena Williams. 

Despite Zendaya’s initial nerves about her tennis skills, Williams commended her performance, acknowledging the authenticity she brought to the role.

Zendaya’s Nervousness and Apology to Serena and Venus

Admitting to feeling nervous about Serena Williams seeing her tennis skills on screen, Zendaya preemptively apologized to both Williams and her sister Venus. However, Williams was impressed by Zendaya’s performance, even recognizing the lack of real tennis balls in the scenes.

Inspiration for Zendaya’s Role

Zendaya credits the “mothers in my life and around me” for inspiring her performance as a mother in the film. Drawing from her experiences with nieces and nephews, Zendaya found inspiration in observing how mothers navigate parenthood.

Training for the Role

Director Luca Guadagnino revealed that Zendaya underwent three months of training with pro tennis coach Brad Gilbert for the role. Despite the intense training, Zendaya’s commitment to the role ensured minimal use of a body double for tennis scenes.

Family’s Reaction to Sexy Scenes

Acknowledging the film’s Rated-R content, Zendaya warned her family about the sexy scenes in advance. 

Despite the anticipation, Zendaya’s family supported her and understood the nature of the film, with Zendaya highlighting that those scenes were her favorite part of the movie screenings.

“Challengers” is a romantic sports comedy that follows three former teenage acquaintances as they compete in a tennis tournament to become the world-famous grand slam winner.
