On its maiden voyage, the world’s largest cruise ship has set sail from Miami, Florida, but there are concerns about the vessel’s methane emissions.

Introduction

The Icon of the Seas, a 365m-long cruise ship owned by Royal Caribbean Group, has embarked on a seven-day voyage in the Caribbean, featuring island-hopping experiences for its potential maximum of 7,600 passengers.

The Bahamas-registered vessel, costing $2bn (£1.6bn) to build, boasts numerous amenities, including seven swimming pools, six water slides, and over 40 restaurants, bars, and lounges.

However, environmentalists are expressing concerns about the ship’s use of liquefied natural gas (LNG), warning of potential methane leaks that could harm the environment.

LNG-Powered Cruise Ship Raises Environmental Concerns

The Icon of the Seas is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), considered a cleaner alternative to traditional marine fuels.

Despite its cleaner combustion, there are concerns that LNG-powered ships may still emit harmful methane into the atmosphere. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, trapping 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide over 20 years.

Critics argue that the environmental impact of LNG-fueled ships, particularly regarding methane emissions, is underestimated by current regulations.

Environmentalists Warn of Methane Leaks

Environmentalists fear that the LNG-powered ship could leak methane during its operations, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

Bryan Comer, Director of the Marine Programme at the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), emphasizes that using LNG as a marine fuel may result in over 120% more life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions than traditional marine gas oil.

The concern is particularly significant in the context of global efforts to reduce emissions and combat climate change.

Royal Caribbean’s Response and Future Plans

Royal Caribbean maintains that the Icon of the Seas exceeds energy efficiency standards set by the International Maritime Organization. The cruise line asserts that the ship is 24% more energy-efficient than required for modern vessels.

Additionally, the company aims to introduce a net-zero emissions ship by 2035, reflecting its commitment to environmental sustainability.

However, critics argue that relying on LNG may not align with the broader goal of reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions.

Growing Cruise Industry and Economic Impact

The cruise industry is experiencing significant growth and is considered one of the fastest-growing sectors of tourism.

Younger demographics, in particular, show interest in cruise holidays, contributing to the industry’s economic impact. In 2021, the cruise industry reportedly contributed $75 billion (£59 billion) to the global economy.

As the sector expands, balancing economic considerations with environmental responsibility becomes crucial, prompting scrutiny over the environmental footprint of cruise ships.

Conclusion

The departure of the Icon of the Seas has sparked concerns among environmentalists regarding potential methane leaks associated with LNG-powered ships.

While Royal Caribbean emphasizes the ship’s energy efficiency and outlines future plans for net-zero emissions vessels, critics argue that the cruise industry must address the environmental impact of its operations.

Balancing the economic contributions of the cruise industry with sustainable practices remains a key challenge as the sector evolves in response to growing consumer demand and environmental imperatives.
