Apple has cut over 600 jobs after reportedly discarding its self-driving car plans.

Apple is set to lay off 614 staff members from its self-driving car project site in California, signaling a shift in strategic focus for the tech giant. The majority of the cuts are attributed to the abandoned project, according to Bloomberg.

Notification to Employment Department

The state’s employment department received notification on March 28, detailing the impending layoffs scheduled for May. Apple has yet to provide official comment on the matter.

Apple’s Stance on Layoffs

Unlike many of its counterparts in the tech industry, Apple has historically avoided mass layoffs, with CEO Tim Cook emphasizing that such measures would be a “last resort.” However, the company’s recent decision reflects broader trends in the industry, with over 50,000 job cuts reported in 2024.

Global Workforce and Market Position

Apple maintains a global workforce of approximately 161,000 employees, positioning itself as the world’s most valuable company. Despite its formidable stature, industry analysts caution that no company is immune to job cuts, particularly amid shifts in strategic focus.

Strategic Shift and Emerging Technologies

Analysts speculate that Apple’s decision to refocus its efforts away from the self-driving car project is indicative of a strategic pivot towards emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI).

While the move may not be driven solely by efficiency concerns, it underscores the company’s commitment to exploring new avenues of innovation.

Slowdown in Autonomous Vehicle Research

Reports suggest that Apple’s decision to end its self-driving car project aligns with broader industry trends, with companies like Ford and General Motors also scaling back autonomous vehicle research. Rising costs and logistical challenges have prompted a reassessment of priorities in the pursuit of innovative technologies.
